In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund nearly 200 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as more than 40 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a serious blood disorder with mortality rates of up to 80 percent in dogs. The disease causes the dog's body to destroy its own red blood cells, and death is often associated with abnormal blood clotting. Humans with conditions associated with blood clotting are treated successfully with anti-coagulant therapy. Investigators will develop tests that can detect whether a dog with IMHA is predisposed to abnormal blood clotting. Such knowledge could be used in future studies to determine whether initiating anti-coagulant therapy in dogs that test positive for a predisposition could effectively and safely treat them.
