karen cox asks:

my dog is 8 years old and he is hunching his back, having slite temors, he is also experincing loss of appetite and will not eat his favorite treats. I am unsure as to the cause of this any information would be helpfull. Thank you

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Karen,

With the symptoms you describe it would seem there is pain in the area.  Your vet will want to check the back and abdomen as to what is causing the pain.  It could be anything from slipped disc in back, foreign body in stomach or intestines and pancreatitis to something as simple as indigestion.  Not having any appetitie would be cause for alarm.  If you can take his temperature rectally.  Normal is 101.5 degrees, anything higher than 103 is of concern. when you combine with other symptoms and not getting over the pain and return of appetite within a day, would necessitate to get an appointment quickly to determine cause and start treatment.  Hope he is insured, then at least cost will not be a problem.  Too late now to insure for this problem.  Dr. S

Sue asks:

My dog had a fatty tumor just under skin surface removed, side of his head between eye and ear. Now he is not able to shut his eye. Is it nerve damage and will he ever be able to shut his eye again?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Sue,

Not being able to shut the eye can cause the eye to dry out and result in corneal damage.  You need to have this checked out for correction and or drops to use in the eye to help maintain a healthy cornea.  Dr. S

Diane asks:

my 11 years old yorkie have cushing disease and a inlorge heart he is on anipryl is weight approx. 13 lbs 1/2 pill a day he is on the medication since 3 months and I notice in the pass 3 days that is stomac is blowded and very hard he eat good always wants some food he goes to the bathroom about twice a day he look bether in the morning but a t night he lie down on his right side and his sotmac look like he as babys.... could you help me what could I do to get is stomac go down I already put him on a diet giving him less food ........could it be is pills or is heart what should i expect... thanks diane

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Diane,

With his age, a heart condition and Cushings it becomes more complicated to regulate medication.  Also, complications can arise more easily.  you have to work closely with your veterinarian and even perhaps an internal medicine specialist to moderate symptoms and side affects.  Dr. S

Yami asks:

Hello, I recently got an albino corn snake. It is my first exotic pet, it is a juvenile and in good health. The problem I am having is finding insurance for such pets. There is no way I would be able to afford veterinary costs if he were to become ill. The /only/ insurance I have been able to find is VPI and I want to know if there are others options available to me incase I don't find VPI to be sufficient in what I need.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Yami,

No other pet insurance provider covers exotics.  You should gain a sample of their benefit schedule and show it to your vet for comparison to their fees.  Typically their benefit schedule does not fit veterianry fees, on average about 50-55% according to them.  The main thing is to know in advance and if the premium is low enough to have a lower percentage of any vet bill covered, then you decide the value to you.

I can relate that your absolute best protection is "good animal husbandry" or the snakes environment, temperature, humidity and food.  For exotic pets, these and stress from overhandling or dramatic changes in their care (environment) are 90% of the cause for problems; improper environment, temperature and wrong foods.  Get a good book on Corn Snakes, if you have not already and read up as much as you can on their needs.  From you planning and question, I would presume you have already done that and want to do more.  With proper husbandry, your chances are greatly diminished of a problem.  Dr. S

Jen asks:

My male Yorkie keeps extenting and cleaing his penis. Which smell? He gets regular baths one to three times a month and get trimmed every 8 to10 weeks. Help

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Jen,

This could be a benign condition called "paraphimosis" which produces a puss looking discharge.  It is not infectious or contagious, but can aggrevate the dog to try and clean it.  Your veterinarian can clean the area and provide medication.  It does tend to reoccur.  Dr. S

ali baroomand asks:

i have 3 year old happy cat, but most of time after meal he trow up!

Step that i take:

1-changing foor ---no result

2-fit miamix with hairball control--no result

3-fit him less food--no result

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Ali,

Your cat could have a large hairball or other foreign body that will not pass with normal cat laxative or many other medical conditions affecting the stomach that only an exam and diagnostic test can determine the cause and possible treatment or cure.

You can try smaller amounts of food two to three times a day (but not less overall).  Different textured food, check to be sure not eating something else in house irritating his stomach or something making him upset or very nervous, such as new cat in household or hew family members.  Otherwise, have him examined by your vet.  Dr. S

Barry Ballance asks:

Have a jack russel/chow mix, has blood in his stool, shaking and not as active.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Barry,

You need to take a stool sample in to your veterinarian to check for parasites and have your pet examined to determine what is cause of being ill.  Sorry, not much more can be done at home.  Dr. S

CAMeron asks:

Hey doctor i was telling you about the bit it is under his mouth and it is gushy when you touch it and i think it is a spidder bite but i am not sure it is also making him not eat and he wines when i touch it and i gave it some antibiotics i was wondering wats you look on this situation and what should i do.Thanks in Advance

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Cameron,

If he was bitten in that area and it is now swollen, it sounds like an infection and probably an abscess.  While antibiotics are indicated, an abscess requires surgery to open up the infection, drain the area, medicate the pocket and continued antibiotics at proper dose for your dogs body size and health condition.

Sometimes you just have to find a way to afford the care if you want your pet to get healthy.  this is why I "push" so hard for always being prepared with pet health insurance.  Dr. S

Belinda Brooks asks:

Hello, I have a cat that is about 3 years old and has been a street cat most of his life, i have recently been able to afford a few shots and have brought him indoors, letting go outside when its warm so he doesnt go stir crazy. He has always drooled and had a hard time eating, the vets discovered his back teeth were infected and needed to be extracted with the hefty price of $900 something i cannot afford, i had been able to afford anti-biotics to get rid of infection. I had let him out the other day to go play since it was warmer then usual he came back and both of his top-front caninines are broken, they are very loose and it is very hard for him to eat, and already missing most of his teeth he drools uncontrolably. I reallly want to help this cat, i love him but i cannot affordf 1800$ for his teeth. He needs theses removed but i dont know what to do, are there any insurances that cover the extractions?

He needs help ASAP but i dont have that kjind of money what can i do?!

HELP!

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Belinda,

Insurance is purchased prior to a problem for the unexpected future medical problems.  Now you need financing option which is also available.  Ask about Chase Health Advance or other options with your vet.

It is just these types of unexpected medical events that I continue to lobby on behalf of pet health insurance.  By paying an affordable monthly premium, then you have the help of 80% coverage with the right plan.  Sorry, too late on this problem, but not for other future medical events which will happen.  Dr. S

mr. dog asks:

my dog got out of my house and we chased her for 45 min. and got her. she was seen around cars but we dont know if she was hit or not. she is lmping. (front right paw) she wont let us touch it but she is walking on it. plaese reply!

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Impossible to determine, could be anything from a sprain to some trauma  such as a car.  You have to use your judgement on taking her in for emergency or waiting until after Holiday for regular visit.  If walking on it and money is an issue, then give it some more time to see if continues to improve.  Dr. S

Sue B asks:

I have 5 cats - I have just spend over $500 because of one getting upper respiratory problem and passing it on to the other 3 (1 is totally outdoor only).

I cannot be doing this or taking them all to the vets at the same time to get a discount!

I'm thinking of getting some pet insurance for them to help with future problems. What would be a good one for them to save me money and be able to vet them when necessary?

Thanks,

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Sue,

Just answered similiar question and stated I am biased, since I am with Pets Best Insurance, www.petsbest.com.  But did point out that you can get a "Friends of the Foundation" discount on this web site by clicking though to Pets Best and multi pet discount, but limited to 20% total discount, except NY, which has limit of 10% by law.

Pet Insurance is a great way to budget.  Pay an affordable monthly premium and then when (not if) your pet has medical problems, you can get 80% covered after deductible.

Be sure you get a plan that pays 80%, not one with a benefit or fee schedule which determines reimbursement.  As those are usually much less on average.

Another source is www.naphia.org where companies, including Pets Best are members of association that adheres to high standards and independent reviews of service.

But, with five cats, even with discount it will cost you.  However, you may jump way ahead in few months, a year or longer if you stick to it.  I cannot tell you how many times in these hard economic times that I hear of pet owners not having the funds to take care of their beloved pet.  Pet Health insurance is a way to always be prepared.  Dr. S

ms diane1 asks:

i live in brooklyn ny and i really can't afford to go to a vet, can you tell me where i can find a free clinic for animals.

also how old does a cat have to be to get their shots. my cat is about 5 weeks old.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Check with local ASPCA or local shelter.  You can also go online and through internet see if any local shelters that have cheper vaccine clinics.  Doubt you will get it free, but maybe near cost.  You should have your kitten examined and start vaccines, from 6-9 weeks of age.  Depending if mother vaccinated prior to birth, if the kitten nursed and current health.  Plan now for starting next week.  dr. S

ms diane1 asks:

can i give a 5week old kitten milk or what can i feed him?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Ms diane

You can get replacement milk from the pet store that would have more nutrients that a kitten that young need.  Milk alone will not be enough.  You can also start out now with some canned cat food and soon with dry kibble, to provide a better balanced diet.  Dr. S

David asks:

Hello, I have a 3 year old maltese that has had an upset stomach for several weeks now. We took him to the vet and they put him on an antibiotic, which seemed to help for a couple of days. He now has it back. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

David,

I presume you completed the course of medication and did not stop once the vomiting stopped. If that is the case, then either the medication did not cure the condition, needs to be done longer or you may have to take next steps and have diagnostic test performed to determine cause of upset stomach.  Also, be sure he is not getting into things in the home that are causing new episodes, foreign bodies, strange foods, plants or other toxins.  Watch him to see if he is getting into something in the yard or house that may cause reoccurence and then if nothing found, check back with your vet and report.  dr. S

Jennifer Brown asks:

Which pet insurance is the best value for the money you have to pay? I have 3 cats and 2 dogs that I am interested in getting the insurance for but do not want to spend money on something that is not worth it. Could you please shed some light on the topic for me?? Thanks.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Jennifer,

Please know up front I am biased, as I am the founder of Pets Best Insurance, as well as the founder of the entire industry in the United States.  In 1982 I started the first pet insurance that succeeded and is still the largest pet insurer.  In 2005 I started Pets Best because I wanted a better product for pets and pet owners.

There are now 16 pet insurance providers and they vary a lot in value and price.  Although it is difficult to discern which are "better" from looking at the web sites, I think the best method is to gain a recommendation from someone or some group you trust.

Obviously, the Morris Animal Foundation trust and recommends Pets Best.  In fact you can recieve a "Friend of the Foundation" discount by enrolling through the Morris Animal Foundation web site.  In addition, I am most proud to state that Pets Best Insurance is also exclusively recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association-Group Health & Life Insurance Trust.  They did extensive review "homework" for the veterinary profession and chose us.  But again, I am biased.  You can also go to www.naphia.org and get a list of pet insurance providers that belong to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, which subscribe to high standards and independent reviews of their service and claim payments.  Plus, whom ever you ulimately choose, be sure they reimburse your pet expenses based on your vets bill, not a benefit schedule or fee schedule, which is usually much lower than veterinary cost.  Then you won't have any unpleasant surprises, only good surprise in protecting your pocketbook when, not if something happens. Dr. S

Michelle Smith asks:

I have a 6 month old Shih Tzu and I have tried two times now to get her spayed. They came back to me the last time that her specific gravity was slightly low and her BUN and something else was high which is signs of kidney disease. My puppy is very healthy and she is very playful. What is the life span of a dog with kidney disease. Also, I do I know for sure that she does indeed have kidney disease?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Michelle,

Postponement of the spay surgery is common if blood results indicate an internal medical problem such as kidney disease.  Most cases are curable and respond to treatment in young dogs.  Usually, a recheck of the blood in a few weeks is performed to see if the BUN is going back down to normal.

Dogs can have chronic kidney disease or congenital disease which requires a lifetime of treatment and special foods.

Complete kidney failure is more common in cats, but can happen in dogs depending on the cause of the kidney damage.

You should complete the treatment course, have the blood retested to determine next steps if any.  If the BUN rises despite treatment, then much greater cost and diagnostics will have to be performed to determine cause.  You may even have to have a Specialist in internal medicine examine your puppy if it worsens.  Dr. S

janet middleton asks:

hi dr. stephens. i asked you about my 3 year old male lab sniffing my 10 year old female mix, and about him suddenly urinating on random household things. i wanted to follow up with you and ask, if i get him neutered now (at 3 years), will it help, or is he already programmed as to what he wants to do?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Janet,

At this age, most dogs will still lift their leg to pee.  But it will stop roaming if they smell a female in heat, reduce chance of testicular cancer, decrease aggression and may eliminate "marking" behavior or at least reduce it.  Dr. S

Morgan asks:

I'm seriously considering adopting a 1 year old Siberian Husky from a family trying to get rid of him. They have records of his shots and I noticed they did not take him to get his most recent shots. Is there a time period or window of effectiveness for shots for dogs? What health issues should I worry about or have him tested for?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Morgan,

It is not too late, even if insufficiently vaccinated as puppy.  That simply made him more vulnerable should he have contacted the viruses.  As an adult you can take him in now.  Present what vaccines he has had and your veterinarian will prescribe which vaccines are necessary depending on where you live and his exposure.  For instance if boarding him or taking him where there are many dogs, would be different than if only at home.  Also, you can obtain a routine care endorsement with pet insurance that coveres the routine vaccines, exam, neutering, teeth cleaning, parasite test.  Be sure you purchase it and wait the appropriate waiting period before usine it.  Usually 2 weeks.   Be prepared for your pets needs financially and have peace of mind.  You can get a "Friend of the Foundation" discount on this web site.  Dr. S

Jocinda asks:

I have a dog whose gum is peel down to the bone and how long does it take to heal or could there be somthing done about it with out spending alot of money going o the vet.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

If this is due to gum disease or bad teeth it will not get any better until the tartar from the teeth is cleaned professionally, down into the gums.  The gums treated and probably a course of antibiotics.  If due to an injury, it depends on wether it gets infected or not.  Gingival tissue damage in the mouth if the cause is corrected has a strong ability to heal.  Doubt it will heal without treatment.  The cost being the factor for a pets health is very very common and why I lobby so hard for pet owners to always be prepared with pet health insurance, before the problem develops.  Dr. S

leen asks:

Hi, I have a 5 yr old Rott. it sounds like theres something stuck in his throat while hes breathing and when he gets really excited he starts wheezing.. do u know what can cause this... i know for a fact he doesnt have n e thing in his thoat.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Leen,

Only an exam and perhaps x-rays will determine what is wrong and what needs to be done.  It could be anything from an infection to a defect in the throat to a heart condition.

I cannot overstate that having pet health insurance in advance of a problem is the way to go for pets.  Paying an affordable monthly premium, so you always have financial help when these unexpected medical problems occur.  Better for your pocketbook and your pet.  Dr. S

katie v asks:

Hello,

I have a lasa-poo who is 10-11 yrs. old. He has been overweight his whole life, he is a trash dog, he gets into our garbage daily. Lately he has been urinating on himself and looseing weight dramaticlly. It doesn't seem to be effecting his appitite too much. What do you think it is?

Thanks.

Katie

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Katie,

You did not say whether he is also drinking a lot, which I presume since he is urinating more?  At this age, he really needs to have an exam and general health panel taken as the first step.  Diabetes is a concern, given the symptoms you describe and only your veterinarian can determine the cause, but it is something that will only get worse if you wait.  Hope you had the foresight to place pet health insurance on him prior to the symptoms, then at least the financial part would not be a problem.  Dr. S

Roy asks:

I have a 15 lb shitsu and he needs trimming and will not let us. However, knots on his underbelly requires some close clipping. How do the expert do it? Can I give him a sedative and clip him with out harming him. Also, if so what can I buy over the counter that will allow me to groom him without him getting so upset?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Roy,

See your veterinarian for prescription sedative to use.  you might also want to try positive reinforcement, with praise and treats for allowing him to be combed first and build up to full grooming.  that way he would see that positive things happen when he is groomed.  Dr. S

MARK asks:

iHAVE A WESTY WITH UPSET STOMACH IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN GIVE HER?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Mark,

You did not relate wether there was any diarrhea or vomiting involved?  and wether it was a recent occurence or chronic.  Certainly, if diarrhea you can try rice in diet, or bland dog food.  If prolonged vomiting or diarrhea you must see your veterinarian to determine the cause which can be a host of different causes, each with different treatments.  Dr. S

Walt kinley asks:

I have a male cat fixed about 12 years old good health he is a tiger but he pulls his hair out on his back from the middle of his back to his tail he pulls it out with his teeth it looks like he has a saddle what could be causing this he doesn't go down to the skin it isn't bald where he does it but he does lose allot of hair thankyou for your help Walt kinley

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Walt,

It sounds like your cat has developed an allergy.  They manifest the allergy by excess licking and hair chewing/pulling.  Could be from a variety of causes, fleas being very common, even a few.  It is the saliva from the flea that causes the allergy.  Your veterinarian, after an exam can prescribe medication to control the allergy.  Jack

jim asks:

Dear Jack, I have a very young cat (two or under) that keeps vomiting up his food, although his appetite doesn't seem to be affected. Also, he is just as playful, alert, and doesn't seem to be sick at all,

Sincerely, Jim

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Jim,

It could be do to excess hair from grooming.  Try a paste to prevent hairballs, or hair accumulating in the stomach and causing vomiting.  There are many brands at your local pet store. If that does not work, you should consider an exam.  Jack

JENNY C. asks:

My 5 yr old english bulldog was just diagnosed of bladder cancer Tcc and vet says she has a good chance if surgery, chemo and medication is given.. Unfortunately, I can't afford to give her thr proper treatment to preserve her life.. I know most insurances will not work with pre existing conditions.. Can you give me any other suggestions or any help so I can provide my precious dog a chance to live?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Jenny,

Unfortunatly this is exactly why for the past 26 years I have been preaching the benefits of pet health insurance.  Paying affordable monthly premiums in exchange for coverage when you need it.  Talk to your vet about ChaseHealth or Care Credit, these are firms that make favorable loans, even interest free for a period of time and the vet discounts their bill for the immediate payment for their fees.  Jack

Janet Middleton asks:

i have a female 10 year-old lab/shepard mix who has been spayed since she was 6 months old. i also have a 3 year-old male full lab who is not neutered. the male lab, for the past 3 days or so, has been sniffing the old female, i mean, reallly sniffing. he drools all over everything, and he has started urinating on things, for instance, the Christmas tree. this is very unlike him. why is he acting like she is in heat, when that is impossible, and what would you suggest i do about his behrvior. thanks for your time.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Jane,

First determine if your female might have a vaginal infection or discharge.  This would explain the behavior.  If not consult Arden Moore on this site regarding behavior problems.  Also, this is typical of male dog behavior when they are not neutered, to lift their leg in urinating.  Even now at his age this behavior may continue.  Jack

Kristina asks:

My 9 year old Australian Sheep Dog has just been diagnosed with cushings disease and diabetes. When we give her the insulin she begins to shake because she refuses to eat. The sight of food makes her sick to the point where she turns away and vomits. Do you have an idea of what to do? Please help, she is so much more than a pet to us.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Kristina,

You did not say if you were also providing medication for Cushings.  It sounds like you need to work with your veterinarian to balance the medication and to time the treatments better around when she eats.  Get on a schedule where the glucose levels are higher from eating, before the Cushings medication for instance.  This requires you working close with your vet to find the right balance.  Jack

Mary Ellen Thibodeau asks:

Dear Dr. I have an 8 year old female cat who has recently started pooping on my bed. She has always pooped outside of the litter box, although she pees in it just fine. My hsband says she is diung this because she knows I don't like her (which is true now that she poops next to me while I'm sleeping). She has no health issues-she's very healthy. We also have 4 other cats, only one who has any significant interaction with her. I need help, as though I love cats, I can't live with this behavior.

Thank you,

mary Ellen Thibodeau

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

mary Ellen,

There is an answer, try Arden Moore Ask the Expert on Behavior on this site, or go tow www.animalbehaviornetwork.com.  They will be able to give you assistance and correct this problem.  Jack

Sandy asks:

My male cat has a temperature of 105 and has just been laying around on my bed all day. He is 5 years old and a bit over weight but active. He lives in an apartment and does not go outside.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Sandy,

This is a high temperature and requires attention.  It is a sign of infection somewhere and needs veterinary care.  Prolonged high temperature can be life threatening.

The mistake that many feline owners make is thinking that an "indoor" cat does not get sick or injured.  They are still prone to all the many illnesses, only the number of potential accidents is diminished by being indoors.  Cats hide symptoms far longer and better than dogs, thus when they are ill and finally noticed the adverse condition is more severe.  Jack

Christie asks:

i took my 6 year old indoor cat to the vet last month... she got 2 shots 1 rabies the other i forget....she now has a small mass on her hind upper quarter which she doesn't seem to mind---i am afraid it is vaccine induced fibrosarcoma... could it just be a mass from the shot? but it doesn't seem like the spot of the shot? if it was, would her health become bad? or is it like a silent killer type... would they have to do a biopsy to tell?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Chistie,

Sounds like a reaction to vaccine, but could be a lipoma, fatty mass or another growth.  If not reduced after Holidays, take her in for exam.  Fibrosarcoma's generally would take much longer to develop. Jack

Melissa asks:

My 2 and 1/2 year old female cat bites my face when we are snuggling. I know she's not agitated or feeling unsafe - anything but. She only does it when we are the most affectionate, and she's very comfortable and purring. She'll also make it a point to reach up and touch my face, sort of grab it. This also hurts, because she is not declawed, and will use them on me. It reminds me of the bite a mother will do to a kitten to calm them down when she is bathing them, because she'll sometimes hold the bite for a few seconds, then release. Other times, it seems like she's trying to get a better sense of what my face is? It'll just be a quick nibble. I should mention that she was born about an hour after all the other kittens..and has always been very nervous with anyone but me. Thank you in advance!

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Melissa,

Go to Arden Moore on this site for behavior advise.  Jack

Ramona asks:

Hi, Doctor I have a female poodle 7yr,s two days ago she started draining,a grayish green, brown fluid from her vagina area. now she just got over her menstral,a month ago. this is the first time this has happened to her. she,s eating and goes potty fine, this is not a small amount of fluid, she fills a pull up diaper in 4to5 hours, what could be the cause of this. she has always been in good health. we got a new 2 mo.old puppy afew weeks ago,I Think she may be alittle jelous but this would"nt be causing this would it. or do dogs go threw menopause like people should she see a doctor. please answer soon, very worried. THANK YOU

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Ramona,

This looks like a uterine infection and could be a pyometra, a very dangerous condition.  A discharge after the heat that you describe is not normal and dogs do not have cycles like humans or menopause.  Have her checked and best to have an ovariohysterectomy, especially at her age.  Hope you took the precaution to have pet health insurance.  Jack

nicole asks:

my dog has this horrible hacking cough i dont know what it is or what i should do about it

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Niclole,

It can be anything from kennel cough to heart failure.  Impossible to say without an exam and perhaps an x-ray of the chest.  Your veterinarian will have to exam your dog and determine or perform diagnostic test to find the cause.  Jack

Lori asks:

Are there any natural remedies that will ease the symptons of Canine Cushings disease?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Lori,

You can try www.altvetmed.org to find a holistic veterinarian or Dr. Shawn Messonnier at www.petcarenaturally.com to find out more on holistic medicine.  Jack

Karmen asks:

My puppy keeps throwing up her water and is not eating, SHe seems very thirsty and is trying to eat

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Karmen,

Repeated vomiting is not normal.  It can be host of things from not too serious to very serious. Your only option is an exam and your veterinarian can determine from the exam the next steps, whether it is treatment to determine if that will work or diagnostic test to find the cause of the vomiting.  Hope your puppy is insured, then at least the cost is not a concern, only getting her health.  Jack

mary jacobs asks:

My dog has a big red sore-looking spot on top of her nose. Doesn't look infected but is puffy and swollen. It could possible be from her trying to get into neighbors yard and scraped against fence, but not sure. What is your opinion. Could it be a fungus?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Mary,

It could be many things, infection due to an abrasion from fence is possible.  Clean it with hydrogen peroxide, put antibiotic ointment on if you have some and if does not improve, see your vet.  Jack

nicole asks:

i have a pug and her eyes is all blood red. do i need to take her to the vet?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Nicole,

The short answer is yes, the red could be a simple prolapsed third eyelid (cherry eye) and is not an emergency. Or it could be much more serious, such as  blood in the interior of they eye, or an external ulcer, all of which could lead to blindness or loss of they eye.  These are emergencies and need attention at once.  Cannot really tell from your description, but given the potential serious riks, you need to have your pet's eye examined.  Jack

sherri perkins asks:

Does this insurance pay for such things as xrays required by OFA?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Sherri,

Typically not, as it is a hereditary condition excluded.  The new policy we have underwritten by Aetna will pay a limited amount towards hereditary conditions of $500, $1,000 or $2,500 depending on the plan type.

The wellness/routine care riders do pay for annual visits, blood test, heartworm and parasite test, dentals and vaccines.  The medical and accident portion would pay for x-rays if there was limping, pain in hip, fractures, etc. from trauma. And of course treatment. Jack

Kourtney asks:

What do i do if my begal is pregnent with pitbull puppies and she is really big and not having her puppies and it is time.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Lourtney,

Pregnancy is 63-65 days and if she goes into labor and unable to have the puppies you have to seek veterinary attention or you will lose both the puppies and the mother.  There is nothing you can do at home.

If you had the Pets Best health insurance you could have had financial help, as they cover limited benefits for most breeds. Otherwise, it will all be out of your pocket. In these hard economic times, pet health insurance makes even more sense inbeing protected for your pet and your pocketbook. Jack

Julie Mills asks:

I have a pug and she has had diahrea for several weeks (3). They gave me an antibiotic as well as live bacteria to clear up the runs. If she had more than one infection going on would the antibiotic work on both? And can it cause the runs to not clear up?

Thank you

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

If you do not see an improvement in a few days, call your veterinarian.  Be sure to complete the antibiotics completly.  Jack

Caitlin asks:

I can't seem to find any insurance here in the U.S. that covers incidents related to breeding such as a C-Section or surgery related to whelping, etc. Do you know of any plan that can cover it? Thank you!

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Caitlin,

Yes you can go on this site and enroll in Pets Best and even recieve a Friends of the Foundation discount.  Certain breeds are excluded due to their high propensity to require a C-Section and the benfits are limited based on plan type chosen.  Plus there is a 14 day wait for coverage from enrollment.  Be sure to check their web site to determine if your breed is eligible for the limited benefits.  Dr. S

Linda Mandigo asks:

I went to Best Pets Insurance looking for coverage for my 8 year old rescued Papillon, who like every other dog and human in Dutchess County, NY has been positive for Lyme Disease at some point. As I am sure he knows, once one has been exposed, even after treatment, as with all of the tick bearing diseases, you always test positive at some level after that. Does that mean your company covers no dogs in the North East of this country. "This is so common that we are shocked when a dog doesn't have it," says Dr. Martha Gearhart of Pleasant Valley Animal Hospital, Pleasant Valley, NY. So why your exclusion? Thanks.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Linda,

Lyme Disease would only be excluded with Pets Best insurance if they pet currently had the condition prior to enrollment.  Once treatment was completed, the condition would be eligible for coverage should the pet reacquire the disease at a later date.  A long term titer does not  preclude coverage, only if condition is present prior to enrollment.  Medical records would be required if the condition occured close to the policy effective date to confirm.  Dr. S

Denise asks:

Can you tell if a dog has cancer just by feeling the dog?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Denise,

No, it requires a biobsy and histology or analysis of the cells from the mass/tumor to determine if it is malignant/cancer on not.  You can at times palpate a mass in the abdomen with skill, but you do not know if benign or not from simply feeling it.  Jack

mark bagby asks:

My austrailan sheperd puppies just turned 5 weeks old. I noticed today that one of them has a soft spot on the top of his head. Like there is no skull there at all. Is this normal? He seems to be growing like the others and eating to?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Mark

this condition is more common in the large "domed" breeds such as the chihuahua.  In fact my Torrey has such a gap and she is 7 years old with no ill affects.  At this young age it may still ossify some closing the gap.  Jack

lisa asks:

My 9 yr old basset hound has a large lump in her armpit that she does not mind when I touch it. She seems OK otherwise, but does sleep alot. I made a vet appt, but it is not for a few days from now. Is it cancer?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

lisa,

It could be a benign tumor, or a lipoma which is a fatty benign tumor.  And of course at her age, cancer is common.  your vet will do an exam and possibly a biobsy to determine what the lump consist of.  Over 60% of dogs over 6 years of age will get a cancer, but they also get many lumps and bumps which are not cancerous.  Dr. S

keso asks:

i have a 3 year old miniature poodle. she hasnt dad any ilnesses or injuries. today she started to have issues with her throat. she keeps swiveling her toung and is making a rough snoring kind of noise with her throat. She also is hacking up air like she is about to throw up but nothing comes up. i'm not sure if she has a soar throat or maby something got stuck in her throat. i want to know what could be the cause of this and how it can be fixed or helped.please write back as soon as possible. thank you.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

kero,

It could be a host of causes, a foreign body in throat is possible, an upper respiratory condition, called "kennel cough" can cause similiar symptoms.  Pharyngitis, laryngitis are also possible.  Only an exam can determine cause or need for diagnostic test if not readily apparent.  Dr. S

Sheri Benjamin asks:

We have a full blooded German Shepherd that is 4 years old. We have notice for the last few months that he is either having an seizure or something in the 5 acres we live has a poison plant or animal. He has lived here his entire life. We live in Central Florida. His symptoms are falling over than getting up with a wobble walk than he will throw up. This only last for a few minutes

Thanks

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Sheri,

Could be epilepsy from your description of getting over the siezure and being disoriented for a time afterwards.  your veterinarian will likely perform test that rule out other causes for a siezure.  Poisioning will usually result in continous siezures with no lapse unless treated in emergency.  your pet needs a blood test to check internal organs in addition.  Jack

Gautam Parekh asks:

Dr. Stephens,

I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANSWER. It is very insightful and has got me thinking about the seriousness of situation at hand! This is a followup questions about my adopted stray pet dog in Mumbai, India. I ran a stool test again and found out today that the hook worms are no longer present in my pet dog's stool. He STILL has diarrhea. We gave him 6 doses of anti-diarrhea medication called "Metrogyl" but it hasn't stopped his diarrhea. His current diet includes Milk (1/2 litre in the morning and 1/2 litre in the evening), 3 Eggs, Eukanoba Dog Food (1 in morning and one in the evening) and 12 biscuits/cookies during day and evening. What tests or course of treatment do i start to determine the cause of diarrhea and nurse him back to health? Thx in advance.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

First correct his diet.  many adult dogs cannot tolerate milk and this can even cause diarrhea.  Try a commercial  bland diet, such as I/D from Science diet, might try rice with food.  raw eggs are a no no and not indicated with diarrhea.  There can be many causes of chronic diarrhea if these changes don't work, might need a specialist in internal medicine consultation.  Jack

shaela asks:

my puppy has parvo and i do every thing i can

1. i give her antibiotics that the vet gave me for her

2. i give her the medicated water that they gave me

3. i give her chicken broth

4. i give her water

5. i also give her pedialite

6. i wash her blankets and bed every night and with the same bleach

7. and i keep her away from all other dogs please tell what else i can do and what my chances are of keeping her?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Wendy,

Keeping hydrated with fluids, giving your medication, controlling the diarrhea and vomiting are critical.  Best if condition is severe to be hospitalized on IV fluids.  IV fluids and medication are always better.  Follow your vets advise, keep warm, hydrated and nurse her through it.  As you know Parvo can be very deadly, but many respond to treatment.  Jack

Wendy asks:

We have a 6 year old Basset Hound that we belieiv may have allergies. His eyes are either goopy or watery and the skin under his legs is pink. I have removed the wood chips from our yard (bad idea) and replaced it with pea gravel, we have tried some really expensive dog foods mainly venison and rice (currently we use Taste of the Wild). The last couple of weeks his dewlap has been getting red and smelly. He gets this waxy stuff that builds on his fur and the inside of the collar. We took his collar off and washed his neck with warm water and he was 75% better this morning. Can you help us help poor Elvis? Thanks

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Wendy,

Allergies can be from food, pollen or contact source.  Basset's have excess skin that tends to trap mositure and bacterial growth.  Best you can do at home is good shampoos, coat conditionsers after the bath, dry good and keep any areas that trap mositure in the excess flaps of skin clean.  Eliminate any fleas and if still a problem, you have to seek medical attention and formulate a plan with your veterinarian for home maintenance.  jack

Christina asks:

My poor dog; she never has any problems, but for the last two weeks she has had this spot around her whiskers, only on one side of her nose that has becoming more and more bald, red and now bubbly. She has always gone through various fields and never been allergic to anything and since she hasn't been in any fields lately, I don't think that would be the problem anyway. I have tried hot spot stuff, that hasn't worked. What can I try that is over the counter, we are very poor and would like to try anything before spending a fortune on vets. Sincerely thanks and Happy Holidays!!

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Christina,

Two conditons come to mind from your description, either a pyoderma, which is also called hot spot at times and a histiocytoma.  The later is a tumor and will not respond to any home therapy.  Your attention early will keep the cost lower.

Once again, another strong example and testimony to getting pet health insurance for your pets, then with affordable monthly budgeting cost like this are of little concern, when getting 80% back after the deductible.  Dr. S

Gautam Parekh asks:

Hi,

I am from Mumbai, India. I have adopted Stray dog who is 2 years old. He has been having diarrehea for few months now. Our local vet got a stool test done. We found hook worms and blood in his stool. I was wondering what course of treatment should be put him on. The local vet gave him some antibiotics and has asked us to give him Metrogyl (local anti-diarreahea) medicine. He has lost a lot of weight however at this time is still active but something needs to be done fast. Your help or pointing me in the right direction would be deeply appreciated. Rgds, Gautam :)

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Gautam,

I presume you treated the hookworms?  Also, may need to recheck the stool sample to determine if your pet still has worms, sometimes the medication has to be repeated or they get reinfected.  Other causes of diarrhea may also need to be  investigated.  This is too long not to affect your pet in other negative ways, dehydration and even internal organ failure or death if not corrected.  Other conditions, other than internal parasites may need to be determined, such as chronic inflamatory bowel disease.  you need to return for more diagnostic test.  Dr. S

Sherwin Javier asks:

I have a pit bull hes been throwing up non stop all day from food to water what can i do?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Vomiting in dogs can be from a variety of causes, everything from a foreign body to viral or metabolic.  Occassional vomiting can simply be due to eating roughage or GI upset for no specific reason.  But what you are describing sounds much more serious and needs attention.  Depending on what your vet finds on exam, they may need to perform some diagnostic test to determine the cause.  Repeated vomiting is not normal.  Jack

linny asks:

Hi there Dr.Jack...my airedale terrier is 4 going on 5yrs old just got diagnosed with autoimmune hemolytic anemia-she started feeling and looking bad sat.morning so took her to the vet today(mon. morn) and got the bad news...my vet said her red blood count was at 11 supposed to be 35-45 in dogs and shes undergoing a blood transfusion and gave her a 50/50 chance of making it..what are the odds of her coming out in recovery and if so what kind of life changes are we looking at for my her in the future?I"m so worried and beside myself bc shes always been so healthy-please give me some advice..thanks for your time-linnyb

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Linny,

If your Veterinarian can stabilize her then she could live a relatively normal life.  You should monitor her PCV (packed cell count) from her blood often and learn to watch for symptoms of any crisis.  Autoimmune anemia can be tricky and can flare up quick, but I have seen many dogs lead good long life on medication.  Follow your vets advise on the blood test strickly.  Jack

risa asks:

how do i get pet insurance ? and how much does it caust thanks

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Risa,

You can actually go through Morris Animal foundation site and recieve a friends of the foundation discount with Pets Best Insurance.  Coverage is affordable starting as low as $15 per month for cats and little more for dogs.  Coverage depends on plan type chosen and deductible chosen.  simply click Pets Best icon on site for discount or go to www.petsbest.com or to  www.naphia.org for list of companies belonging to pet insruance association.  Great way to budget and avoid unexpected cost.  Dr. S

Peggy asks:

My Border Collie has been shivering lately. He is a house dog and is aprox. 10 to 11 yrs. old. Do you have any ideas. Thanks

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Peggy,

I find older dogs do tend to shiver more, my min pin who I was around nearly 24/7 did so more as he aged.  Shivering of course can be sign of being cold, but even when that is not the issue, some dogs will if they are nervous or as they age.  You might also check with Arden Moore on the Morris Foundaiton site to see if she has other experience. Dr. S

Annie asks:

I have a 4 year old Jack Russell/Shih Su mix who has been diagonsised with inflamatory bowel disease. Our local vet has ran several tests and x-rays, all of which are normal. She has been refusing to eat any dog food, acts like she has an upset tummy, seems depressed, and is losing weight. She is currently on a dose of steroids. I have tried everything to get her to eat dog food, but to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Annie,

You and your vet may need help from an internal medicine specialist for pets.  Being on cortisone for the IBD should increase her appetitie, so I am perplexed and your vet needs to look into other complications perhaps. Dr. S

Ron asks:

My 2 year old cocker spaniel is very vocal - not barking, but like he is trying to speak. (He sounds like the wookie in Star Wars.)

The problem is that people take it as agressive growling. He does this when he is being pet or massaged, which he loves - he never tries to get away.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Go to Arden Moore on this web site for behavior expert advise.  Dr. S

Devakki asks:

Dear Dr. Jack

Thank you for your response. But it seems that in order to treat her teeth infection (extraction), she has to be anesthetized and

is that risky with heartworms?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Depends on severity, but with today's anesthetics and your veterinarian it can be done safely.  No gurantees, but I would go ahead for my dog.  Dr. S

Devakki asks:

My 11 year old terrier just came back heart worm positive. She also has a bad tooth infection, foul smell breath and foaming in the mouth. Is she treatable?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Devakki,

Certainly, she is treatable and could have many years left to provide you companionship.  Heartworm treatment is serious and can be complicated, even have unintended consquences, but certainly most dogs can be treated if not in advance stage of heart failure from the worms.  The mouth odor is more than likey infected teeth, which needs to be resolved first and placed on antibiotics, as emboli or infection from the mouth, gums and teeth could adversly affect the heartworm treatment.  But all treatable. Dr.S

ELENA asks:

I HAVE A 12YR OLD PIT BULL WHO HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO HAVE A BOWEL MOVEMENT FOR 6 DAYS. SHE TRIES BUT NOTHING COMES OUT - THE DAY BEFORE LITTLE DROPS OF BLOOD CAME OUT. WHAT CAN I DO??

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Elena,

Sounds like she is serverly constipated and needs an enema.  Depends on how bad it is, it may require sedation and several by your vet to get her clear.  Many times eating bones causes constipation.  Having gone this long she needs immediate attention and relieve if you don't want severe complications and more cost.  Hope she is insured.  Dr. S

Cyndi asks:

I am thinking to get a lab. I was wondering if you think climbing steps is an issue for this breed?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Cyndi,

You did not say how many steps and how often?  My little two pound chihuahua climbs two flights of stairs every day at work and one flight in my home office.  The stairs are higher than her, but she never lets any human or dog beat her to the top!

I am sure with age, as with my older blind min pin, I will have to carry her in later years.  Assuming a couple of flights of stairs and no hip or joint problems it should not present a problem.  I hope you will get pet insurance for your new puppy so that I don't get another inquiry from you asking where you can have help in paying for an unexpected accident or illness.  Go to this site to recieve a friend of the foundation discount.  Dr. S

Tara Betz asks:

Our 8 year old female dog has Cushings Disease. She requires surgery to remove the tumor. We have an appt w/ a specialist but could you give me an idea of the cost of surgery? Thank you

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Tara,

It depends on a host of factors, which can include:  your pet's health or other medical problems, if your pet is overweight it can cause more time and work at surgery, where you live, more urban or higher cost of living areas will have higher fees, the experience and cost associated with surgeon.  Having said all this, I think you should call and get the estimated cost so your prepared and not shocked.  It will not be cheap.  Dr. S

T.LOGUE asks:

MY DOG HAS A HISTORY OF SEIZRES

IF HE HAS PHENOBARBITAL HE DONT HAVE SEIZERS BUT IM ON MY 3RD VET EACH PLACE IS DRAINING MY BANK ACCOUNT TEST AFTER TEST AFTER TEST UNNESSICARY ,THEN THEY WONT REFILL UNTILL MORE TEST $$$$$$ ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY,,IM JUST GONNA GO SOMEWHERE ELSE TO GET HIS MEDS I HATE VETS NOW

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

T

Would you hate your MD for running test for you?  Your vet is doing what needs to be done.  Phenobarbital is a proven drug to control siezures for epilepsy. But it can have serious side affects and cause liver damage.  Your vet is running periodic blood test to determine if any damage is occuring.  Because if it is they need to alter or change medications.

Financing pet care or getting help with vet bills is why I started the whole category of pet insurance.  So pet owners could pay an affordable amount each month that is budgeted and then when a medical problem occurs they have help, so it is not a financial burden.  It is too late now for insurance to help with the seizures, but not for other medical problems that can and will develop over time.  Dr. S

lo asks:

hi my dog is three mos she throws up alot still eats plays and also she has been leaping on one foot does that mean its broken.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Vomiting a lot is not normal and with the limping you really need to have your pet examined by a veterinarian.  Limping can be from other causes than a broken leg.  If broke or fractured he needs immediate attention.  Do not delay.  I presume you did not insure your dog and will have to pay the bill yourself, but it needs to be seen by a vet.  Dr. S

walter grote asks:

my 5 year old golden ret. loves to run recently we notice he was limping after examing him i found a lump under his armpit i'm taking him to the vet but his appointment is 2 weeks away what can cause this problem

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Walter,

Possibilities are seroma (pocket of serum) due to trauma, tumor either benign or cancer or possibly an abscess.  Your veterinarian will perform whatever test they think necessary based on the findings at exam and from palpating the mass.  Chances favor something benign, but don't know till you have more information.  Hope he is insured.  Dr. S

ken asks:

my 11 month old min. dachsund had her 1st cycle and then her nipples swelled up. will this go down or should she go to a vet?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Ken,

This could be a false pregnancy if she was not bred.  A common occurence and can be easily treated if she does not return to normal within a week or so.  Watch for any other signs of fever, drinking excessively or lethargy and get her examined if she demonstrates any of these, or does not get back to normal quickly.  Dr. S

Abby Rosi asks:

We have been feeding a 5 mon old puppy golden ret fish /sweet potato diet (keeping away from wheat - an older dog has allergies). She was doing well for several months with 2 to 3 bowel movements daily. The last several weeks she has had many BM's (5 or more) during the day and gets us up at 3:00 AM to go out. Often having two BM's within 5 min of each. Is this a food problem or deficiency issue?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Abby,

Sounds like a food problem, go to this web site ask the expert, Arden Moore for better insight into problem.  Dr. S

*Scrappy asks:

My dog's eye is red puffy and he can't open it all the way,a nd he keeps rubbing his eye with his paw. what wrong with my dog's eye?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

It could be several possibilites and can only be diagnosed from an exam.  Then proper treatment implemented.  Could be simple conjuntivitis which will respond usually to opthalmic ointment or drops with antibiotics, could be abnormal eyelash, could be something much worse like an ulcer of the eye which can lead to even worse conditions if untreated.  Could even be a foreign body under the eyelids which can cause an abrasion of the cornea and lead to an ulcer.  Best to have your veterinarian examine the eye.  As I always say, pay lesser amount now or more if left untreated.  If your pet was insured, it would be an easy decision, since some insurers pay flat 80% after deductible.  Be wary of any pet insurers with fee or benefit schedules or area fee schedules which can pay less.  Dr. S

Paula asks:

My 15 yr. old chow mix has been sick for 5 days now. She has diarreah coming out when just laying around. She has lost several pounds, rapid heart beat just wonders in circles. I know she is old. My vet told me to only feed her cottage cheese and rice, but she doesn't want that she wants her canned food. The Flagl and the ceretine are not helping. Is she in the dying stages or is there anything I can give her to make her better?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Paula,

15 is very old for a chow.  I had to face the same difficult decision in October with my companion of 16 years and 9 months.  It was the hardest thing I have ever done.  I postponed it, I cried like a child, I knew it had to be done, but it was Ol so difficult.  No one can tell you when and we cannot stop the circle of life.  Do what you can and if not working, do what is right for your beloved companion of 15 years.  That is an achievment in itself.

Then adopt a pet from the shelter or give a home to another pet that needs it in memory of your Chow.  Dr. S

bob asks:

My 2 year old bordie collie has been sick for 3 days now. His current symptoms include an uncontrolled bladder, weakness, breathing really heavy, and will not eat. He has had a siezure in the past. Can this be related to the siezure?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Bob,

You need to take your collie to your veterinarian immediatly.  There is nothing you can do at home and delays will only increase your cost and decrease your dog's chance for recovery.  Dr. S

tiann/gilbert,az asks:

my dogs eyes were sealed shut for 3 days and they reopened to be off set towards the top of the sockets and a dark blue color he appears to be blinded what is the cuase of this and can he maintain a normal life living blind ?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Tiann,

You really have to have the eyes examined.  Too many different things could be going on.  I do know from experience with my min pin who was blind and deaf for several years that pets adapt easily to disabilities.  It is our ability to adapt and provide a stable environment for them that is key.  I carried him in unknown areas and of course outside to eliminate.  But after over 16 years of companionship it was the least I could do for him.  He was always comfortable and learned where all the furniture was to navigate.  So yes they can lead a good life.  Dr. S

Janet asks:

Four years ago I adopted brother and sister kittens from a shelter. Two yrs ago I moved to a new place and had to place my male cat in a new home because he started showing aggressive behavior toward his sister to the point of dominating everything from food to cat box. Since then my female cat has shown sign of poor general health, such as pale eyes and coat. a long with being under weight and changes in behavior( clinging to me, vocalizing. hyperactive) Two months ago I started giving her vita coat and changed her food. She has shown signs of putting on weight and the color is coming back in her eyes and coat, but about a month ago she began to lose the hair on her tail and her right hind foot and its not showing any signs of growing back. She shows not signs of cat mange. There are no lesions or scabies and I've done a scrap test and no signs of parasites show up. could she have an allergy? This house has had to be totally renovated. paint, dry wall dust and you name it. My question is with all I've given you what is causing the hair loss?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Janet,

Even clean houses have pollens and other potential allergens that can cause an allergy.  Pets, unlike humans typically manifest allergies by biting and chewing their hair coats.  Allergies can be controlled with medication, and in some few instances cured with desenitization thorough your veterinarian or a dermatologist for pets.

Another potential is behavior since only the tail is involved.  Consult Arden Moore on this site as the behavior expert to gain her view.  dr. S

michelle gibbs asks:

I have a nine week old rat terrier pup I noticed his front legs look like they are out of joint. He is very bow legged. He runs abnormally. What could this be?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Michelle,

It could be congenital and nothing you can do to correct, but at this age I worry about nutrional defficiency, mineral or supplements and you have to take action quick to improve, because by 6 months this breed is through growing.  The early months are most important in bone growth.  So, I would ask your veterinarian at next innoculation visit which should be very soon due to early series needed.  That way corrective action might still have time to affect positive outcome.  Don't forget to get your puppy insured now, while young.  Although this bone condition would not be covered, there are many thousands of conditions that are covered.  Puppies need it for their health and your pocketbook will be protected also.  Check on this site for discount offer.  Dr. S

Jim asks:

Our 4 year old long hair cat has recently lost the long hair on her tail, except for the tip. She looks really strange now. There are no lesions or such. She seems heathly other than that. We have never seen her chewing on her tail. Could it be emotional? It started right after she lost her brother.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Jim,

Very possible if no parasites or skin rashes, etc.  Check with behavior expert, Arden Moore also on this site for advise.  Dr. S

Lori asks:

I have a 13 year old Springer Spaniel. We are having two issues with him.

First, he has growled at my husband a couple times. This concerns me because we have two young children.

Second, we keep finding small round pieces of feces on the floor and in the mornings he will have occassionally a bowel movement in our room even though we let him out before going to bed.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Lori,

Go to Arden Moore the Ask the Expert on behavior on this web site for best advise.  Dr. S

Brenda asks:

My Australian Shepherd is nearly 5 years old and about a year ago, her feet began to emit a strong odor. They seem to be more moist than usual also. It's almost imbearable to be in the car with her for any amount of time due to the odor. She is typically an indoor dog, but stays outside on nice days while we are away. Could there be a fungus in our yard or from some other source?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Brenda,

Sounds like she has a pyoderma or fungal infection on her paws.  The smell is the bacteria that grow on the surface due to licking and trauma she probably causes from an allergy.  She starts licking, keeping the area moist and then the fungal or bacteria set up shop.  Your veterinarian can diagnose and prescribe.  Also, use good antibacterial shampoo, blow dry after well and keep her groomed.  Dr. S

Ruth asks:

My female cat is 13 yrs. old. She has some form of leukemia. We just adopted a 2-yr.-old male cat. The 13-yr.-old is drinking a lot more water than usual. Could she have diabetis? Maybe it the dry food she is now sharing with the male cat that is making her more thirsty?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Ruth,

Drinking excessive amounts of water is certainly a symptom of diabetes, along with rapid weight loss.  But drinking more water can be signs of kidney failure, psycogenic (behavior-but less so with her age).  If this continues get a physical exam and blood test for her.

If you look at the questions I recieve, most all are related to financial cost of caring for a pet.  Especially our older pets, which can be expensive.  Purchase and budget affordable amounts for pet health insurance before a problem develops.  Even our senior pets, which cost a bit more, but they have more problems as they age, just like us humans.  Dr. S

shannon asks:

my bearded dragon is really sick. she won't eat she will only move a little bit, but only if picked up. she is very dehydrated her skin will just stay if i touch it. you can feel her insides from the outsides. whats wrong with her? :(

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Shannon,

You must find a veterinarian that specializes in reptile medicine and do so quickly to save your bearded dragon.  None of this is good and nothing I know of you can do at home.  Reptiles and birds can go fast.  Their environment is critical, right heat, humidity and proper food is critical to them.  Once ill, it requires a special knowledge and skill to save them.

ET asks:

I have a mix breed that is 10 years old. He is coughing a lot and seems to have short breathing all the time. He looks good and acts very healthy. The coughing is brought on when he become active by playing, running or simply climbing stairs. He has been to a vet on a regular basis and our last visit was about 6 months ago with no problems found. He looks and acts great except for the short breathing and coughing.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

ET,

At his age, I worry about heart disease which could explain the short breath, excercise intolerance and cough.  Excess weight could also play a role in the problem.  At his age, an annual visit should include a chest x-ray, blood test, urinanalysis and physical exam for early detection.  A good wellness rider to a pet health plan can be obtained that would cover these test, in as little as a two week wait from purchase.  Check out the discount through Morris Animal Foundation web site.  Dr. S

Ernie asks:

I have a 5-6 year old Shih Tzu male that has a discharge from his right eye. Light white color. Is this something that can be handled with eye drop medication. can you let me know what is best for this? Thanks

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

This breed is common to acquire a eye infection, called conjunctivitis.  A common and easily treatable condition with medication from your vet.  They can also have abnormal eyelashes which irritate the eye and can lead to a more serious condition, an eye ulcer.  Left untreated an ulcer can lead to loss of they eye.  Get a diagnosis from your vet and a plan to keep it under control. I know money can be tight, but cheaper to know and treat now than later.  Dr. S

Pam McCullough asks:

We find tiny yellow round flakes on the bed after one of my three cats lies there. When my daughter was home, she said while he was grooming, she saw the flakes around his anus. He does not seem to be itching with these, and we do not see these with the other cats. Could you tell me what this is?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Pam,

It could be tapeworms, take a sample to your veterinarian along with a fecal/stool sample to test for other internal parasites.

Angelina asks:

OUR 12 YEAR OLD GERMAN SHEPARD/ROTTWIELER MIX STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WALKING ON HIS BACK LEG TODAY. MY HUSBAND NOTICED A LUMP THAT SEEMS TO CAUSE THE DIFFICULTY. I'M TAKING HIM TO THE VET IN THE MORNING. WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Anelina,

It could be so many things at his age.  Older pets get host of conditions, both benign and cancerous tumors, arthritis and neurological problems.  That is why I promote pet health insurance, so you can pay the smaller 20% co-pay by paying monthly affordable premium for such events.  Dr. S

mariah asks:

my dog has a big chunk taken out of her neck and she is not acting right what should i do to help her and to clean i tup?!

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

You run big risk of infection, and or an abscess if you don't get proper treatment and antibiotics for the infection.  Pay now or pay more later.

Kimberly Fourcade asks:

why does my 13 year old dalmation walk and poop all the time

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Could be old age and inability to hold bowel movements.  Or could be a medical problem that can be treated.

samantha rivera asks:

does it make a diffrence by size and or type of dog how much there age per human year?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Definitly, smaller dogs live longer and thus the 7 years per human year would seem more appropriate.  Large breed dogs only live 9-11 years on average, as compared to 14-17 for small breed dogs in general.  Also, puppies the first year age rapidly, more so than in later years.  Dr. S

Debra Curran asks:

My two miniature schnauzers and my sons rottweiler/lab mix are wheezing really hard, every once in a while, and sneezing. They have not been to the groomers for a couple of months now, so I don't know if it's kennel cough or not. Do you think it could be?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Debra,

Kennel cough, and other upper respiratory viral and bacterial conditions can be airborne with exposure in the yard or even in the house.  The fact that both dogs came down with upper respiratory symptoms at same time leads you to believe it is contagious.  Dr. S.

hank asks:

hi, my dog cant poop. gave him suppositories,an enema which resulted in a small amount of relief but, doesnt completely clean him out.now he is eatting very little. i also gave him some milk of magnesia.cant afford to go to the vet right now, anything you suggest for now?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Hank, You are assuming that constipation is the problem. If your pet is not eating, then it might be something else.  If it is truly constipation, where he strains and has no bowel movement, you might try another enema.  It may be something else, or you may not be able to get it high enough.  I rarely find where trying home remedies works.  I know you want to save money, but it rarely does.  Dr. S

Donna asks:

Our Black Lab is having some kind of seizures. Sometimes when he gets real excited, he loses control of his back end, and starts to shake all over, at this time he seems to loses control of all body control. What could be happening to him?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Donna,

You need to have some diagnostic test done at your veterinarian to determine cause.  It could be many things, even epilepsy, which requires veterinary attention.  Hope your pet is insured so you are only paying the smaller deductible and co insurance. Dr. S

chris asks:

Our half maltese and half jack russel

four year old female dog has been

urinating ALOT the past two weeks.

She has never had this problem. First

it was wanting out once every hour

than it got to be peeing on the carpet

if I didn't get her outside right when she

scratches on the door.

I have changed her dry food, but the

biggest thing is that she has been eating

people food so much lately she doesn't

touch her dog food. ham especially.

I don't know if she has infection or if it the food.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Chris,

You need to have your dog seen by your veterinarian.  This is not normal and the longer you wait the worse the condition can and will become.  The only way to diagnose and properly treat the condition is for your veterinarian to run some diagnostic test on her urine and blood sample.  Dr. S

Jojo asks:

i have 15 month Shih Tzu. since christmas hoilday is coming around. we are thinking about getting christmas tree. is it harmfull or a health issues to have tree in your home? are shih tzu, ok to be around them?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Jojo,

Prevent you pet from having access to any water at base of tree and keep holiday treats, food, etc off the floor around the tree so your dog does not have access and you should be fine.  Dr. S

Janet B asks:

I just got a puppy on Friday. All day Friday and last night the puppy was fine. Tonight, he started vomiting. He cannot even keep water down. What should I do?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Janet,

This is an emergency and you need to get treatment now.  It could be a host of conditions to cause the symptoms you describe, but with a puppy it becomes  emergency with continued vomiting of water.  Hope your pet is insured, as it may be costly, but the only thing you can do and do it quickly.  Dr. S

BEN BRADSHAW asks:

My son has a ten year old German Sheppard who has had slight arthritis for some time this morning he was bleeding from his mouth, this evening he is only slightly bleeding but is very wobbley when trying to walk. What could cause this ? Thanks for any help

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

 Ben,

There could be many causes in a ten year old dog.  If sudden I worry about a toxin or poision of some type that would cause sudden uncoordination and bleeding.  you may want to consider an emergency clinic or visit if the condition persist or worsens today.  Dr. S

Dennis Hudson asks:

My 12 year old male yellow tabby has become quite unsteady on his feet in the last 2 days. What could be the problem?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Dennis,

It is too hard to determine cause with this vague symptom.  It could be a host of conditions and only an exam and perhaps diagnostic test will determine.  Hope your cat is insured to help with the cost.  Dr. S

PIT BULL LOVER asks:

My dog Monster just started having milk, we dont know why sence we don breed our dogs, and we have all female dogs. She is never near male dogs. She just turned a year in Aug. and she dosnt look big or anything and I cant feel anything in here lower tummy. She is not acting any diifiernt so what do you think is going on here?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

It could be a "false pregnancy" and you may want to spay Monster.  Dr. S

Haydee asks:

i have a 2yr old dog, the docotr said she needed an exam, called vaginal cytology, without waiting for results she went ahead and gave her a shot and some prescription meds, i want to know if this is a normal way to treat any kind of condition or should she have waited? i am concered could you please help..

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Haydee,

Yes it is normal to treat symptoms, especially to start treatment and save you money.  Based on experience, conditions and severity, many times pallative treatments work and no further diagnostics are required.  They main thing is to respond back if the treatments fail, so your vet can go to the next step.  Dr. S

noel asks:

our chihuahua has suffering from a persistent rash on her belly and butt. she responded to antibiotic treatment for a while, but the sores return and a peculiar smell. can you help us please?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Noel,

Only your veterinarian can help if the treatment did not work.  The smell is more than likely bacteria that grows in the sore area.  Dr. S

Ginger Hunter asks:

I have a chihuaha. He has diarreah, and it has blood in it. Is there something I can do at home to help him?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Ginger,

Diarrhea in a small dog can lead to deyhdration quickly.  You can try teaspoon o kaopectate every 4 hours, but if no response within one day, call and make an appointment with your veterinarian to determine cause and initiate proper treatment.  Dr. S

janettea asks:

my 3 month pitbull will not eat he drinks water but food he will not touch it he acts like the food make him sick he throw up 4 times and one time it look like mucus and he is just lying around. please help

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Janettea,

I hope you have insurance to help financially, but your only recourse is to visit your veterinarian and have them treat and try to determine the cause.  Don't wait.  Dr. S

Diane asks:

My 10 month old collie 'slides' her rear paws. Why? Never bothered me before, but now that winter's near we've been walking her and the sidewalks have rubbed her pads raw, one even has a slight slit in it.....So no more walks. Is there something wrong??

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Diane,

Sounds like a nero muscular condition to cause one leg to drag or not lift fully in normal walking.  This is not normal and requires medical attention.  It may be difficult for your veterinarian to diagnose.  Dr. S

Shari Gordon asks:

My dads cat has been ill for the last 10 days. Yesterday he was here for Thanksgiving and was worried cause Calie won't eat or drink anything. He thought is was old age, she is 21 years old. She has the following symptoms: not eating, not using her litter box, unstable on her back legs, and can't seem to get comfortable.. My dad now thinks that it might be Dystemper...Is that possible? He ca't getr her to a vet untill MonDay and he is real worried...

Thanks

Shari

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Shari,

Sounds like old age and perhaps some problem with internal organs like kidneys or metabolic.  Only an exam and blood test will determine extent and cause.  His cat is certainly a very senior citizen.  Dr. S

Ray asks:

We have Bull Mastiff female that has been licking her front paws for the past week. She's gotten to the point where both paws are very swollen and is in obvious pain. Is there a salve or something we can use? We've tried pouring hydrogen peroxide on her paws to both clean what looks like the beginnings of an infection and to stop her itching.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Ray,

This is an allergic reaction and may be due to allergies, either seasonal or environmental.  Only treatments from your veterinarian will relieve the cause.  Dr. S

Janice Clark asks:

My persian cat of 15 1/2 years old refused to eat this morning and this afternoon. Yesterday he ate very little. He is drinking water a little. He is very listless also. I cannot afford a vetinary fee right now. I am struggling financially. Can you suggest anything?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Janice,

15 1/2 is very old and you need to find the budget to have him checked out and some diagnostic test done.  This is especially true of older pets whose relilance is not as good as youner pets.  This is another reason I am recommending pet health insurance, so pet owners can "budget" and not have to scramble around in these hard economic times when their pet is ill or injured.  It is too late now, but not once this condition is diagnosed and on the road to recovery for insurance.  We have 21 year old cats and 16 year old dogs insured, then their owners do not have to worry about finances.  Dr. S

Hl.comeidi Burns asks:

Why does my 4 year old Yorkie shake like he is cold ? It is warm in the house. Three days ago he was diagnosed with pancrentitise. Please help . Thankyou from Heidi.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Dogs shiver when they are nervous, in pain or of course when they are cold.  With pancreatitis, you may have pain involved.  go to Dr. Downing on this site, on ask the expert about pain for more help.  Dr. S

natasha asks:

my 6 year old poodle started leaving her tongue sticking out all of the time. should i be concerned?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Natasha,

Have her teeth and gums checked for infection.  If ok then nothing can or should be done.  It just happens.  But be sure she did not loose a canine tooth or have infected teeth.  Dr. S

Michael Lowe asks:

Dr. Stephens,

I have a 2.5 year old Chespeake Bay Retriever. After hard days of upland game hunting he starts to limp on his right front shoulder. Each time this happens, it takes him longer to recover. He usually recovers completely after a nights rest. However, this last time I hunted him he has taken a full week to recover. I took him to my Vet and had his shoulder x-rayed. The vet indicated he believes he may have osteochondrosis. I have read this is uncommon in full-grown dogs as this is more of a puppy disease while the bones are still growing. I have sent his x-rays off to OFA for a second opinion. My questions are as follows: Is it uncommon for a dog of his age to have this disease? What causes this disease? What are my treatment options? Thank you, Mike

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Michael,

OCD or osteochonritis dessicans of shoulder is not uncommon in this age.  Although many metabolic bone conditions are more common in younger dogs, it can occur in older dogs.  Also possible are arthritis, tendon strain, bone spurs in shoulder (although most but not all would  be visible on x-ray.)  and bursitis, or inflamation of the lining of the shoulder joint.  Treatment depends on underlying cause which could be rest to allow it to heal completely to surgery.  Really dependent on what is really the cause.  If rest and pallative treatment do not work, you may need to have an MRI of shoulder.  Dr. S

Teri asks:

My 2 yr old Golden started scratching terribly yesterday. Then her eyes became swollen. I gave her Benadryl, which seemed to help. She is no longer scratching but she has very swollen ears Could she have been bitten? she is 6 wks pregnant.

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Teri,

It is an allergic reaction of some type it appears.  Possible causes are insects, such as spiders or bees, different food, chemical or other allergen.

THERESA asks:

I have a female cat appox. 5 years old and she recently started going potty on the floor in front of her litter box..I noticed that her urine looks pinkish in color like there is blood in her urine..should i be concerned??

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Yes, Theresa, sounds like your kitty may have a bladder infection.  your veterinarian needs to test her urine.  Jack

bobby asks:

what should i do if my dog is bitting his front paw down to the flesh?

Dr. Jack Stephens responds:

Bobby,
